Mount Kilimanjaro Gear List

A successful Kilimanjaro climb starts with the right equipment. Below is the complete gear list recommended for all routes. This list ensures comfort, warmth, safety, and proper Acclimatisation during your trek.


1. Clothing

Base Layers (Moisture-Wicking)

  • Thermal long-sleeve tops

  • Thermal leggings

  • Lightweight hiking shirts

Mid Layers

  • Fleece jacket or pullover

  • Softshell jacket

Insulation Layer

  • Down jacket or synthetic insulated jacket

Outer Layer (Waterproof / Windproof)

  • Waterproof jacket (GORE-TEX or similar)

  • Waterproof trousers

Lower Body

  • Hiking pants

  • Warm trekking pants for summit night

  • Quick-dry shorts (optional)


2. Footwear

  • Waterproof hiking boots (broken-in well before the climb)

  • Camp shoes/sandals

  • Warm trekking socks (3–4 pairs)

  • Liner socks (optional to reduce friction)


3. Head & Hand Gear

  • Warm wool or fleece hat

  • Sun hat with brim

  • Neck gaiter or buff

  • Sunglasses with UV protection

  • Lightweight inner gloves

  • Insulated outer gloves or mittens (summit night)


4. Sleeping Gear

  • Four-season sleeping bag rated –10°C to –15°C (14°F to 5°F)

  • Sleeping bag liner (optional for extra warmth)

  • Inflatable pillow (optional)


5. Daypack Essentials

  • Daypack (25–35 litres)

  • Rain cover

  • Hydration system (2–3 litres) or water bottles

  • Snacks (energy bars, nuts, dried fruits)

  • Personal first aid kit

  • Sunscreen & lip balm (SPF 30+)


6. Trekking Equipment

  • Trekking poles (highly recommended)

  • Headlamp + extra batteries

  • Dry bags or zip-lock bags to protect electronics

  • Gaiters (optional during rainy season)


7. Personal Items

  • Toiletries (biodegradable soap, toothbrush, toothpaste)

  • Wet wipes and hand sanitizer

  • Quick-dry towel

  • Tissue/toilet paper

  • Prescription medications
